Environmental Education & Sustainability

Turning environmental awareness into community action. Because knowing about climate change is not enough if no one in your neighbourhood is doing anything about it.

Water
Morocco faces one of the most severe water crises in the MENA region. Reservoirs are at historic lows, and water rationing is now a reality in several cities. Most young people have never been taught water conservation practices.
Waste
Morocco produces over 7 million tonnes of household waste annually. Most goes to landfill. Recycling infrastructure exists in some cities but community-level sorting and awareness remain extremely limited.
Gap
Environmental education is absent from most non-formal youth programmes in Morocco. Young people care about the environment but lack the practical knowledge and community structures to act on it.
Why This Matters

The environment is not abstract. It is your neighbourhood.

Climate change, water scarcity, and waste management are not distant global problems. They are daily realities for communities across Morocco. In Rabat, Sale, and Temara, overflowing waste bins, water shortages, and disappearing green spaces affect the quality of life of millions of young people. Yet environmental education is almost entirely absent from non-formal youth programmes in the region.

Medforumm’s environmental programmes do not stop at awareness. We combine education with direct community action. Every cycle includes hands-on activities where participants lead neighbourhood clean-ups, plant trees, set up waste sorting systems, or design water conservation campaigns. The learning happens in the field, not just in a workshop room.

We partner with local environmental associations, schools, and where possible, municipal authorities. Our goal is not to create environmental activists but to build a generation of young Moroccans who understand their local environment and have the practical skills to improve it, one neighbourhood at a time.

How We Work

Our Approach to Environmental Education

DA

Direct Action

Every programme includes community action days: clean-ups, tree planting, waste sorting setup, or water awareness campaigns. Participants do not just learn about the environment. They improve it within the programme timeline.

LE

Local Expertise

We partner with local environmental associations, municipal waste departments, and water authorities to ensure our content is accurate, relevant, and connected to real infrastructure and policy at the local level.

FV

Field Visits

Participants visit local water treatment facilities, recycling centres, landfills, and natural sites. Seeing the reality firsthand creates understanding that no classroom presentation can match.

VR

Visible Results

Every programme produces something the community can see: planted trees, sorting stations, awareness materials, clean public spaces. This builds credibility and motivates further participation beyond the programme.

TT

Train the Trainer

Our Guardians programme creates environmental educators who multiply the impact. Each trained guardian delivers sessions to schools and community groups, reaching hundreds of people per cohort.

SP

Safeguarding

We maintain a safeguarding policy for all programmes. Facilitators undergo background verification. A designated safeguarding officer is available throughout each cycle. Incident reporting procedures are in place.

Local Programmes

Under Environmental Education & Sustainability

Four programmes that combine environmental knowledge with direct community action. All delivered in Arabic (MSA and Darija). All free. All producing visible results in the communities where they operate.

صفر نفايات
Sifr Nifayat · Zero Waste
In Development · Launch 2025

A focused programme on waste reduction and recycling at the neighbourhood level. Participants learn waste sorting, composting basics, upcycling techniques, and how to organise a community recycling system that actually works. Each team of 4 designs and implements a waste reduction initiative in their own neighbourhood during the programme. The programme produces visible, lasting results: sorting stations installed, compost systems started, or collection agreements negotiated with local waste services.

Target
Youth 18-35, neighbourhood-based teams
Duration
2 months · weekly sessions + neighbourhood fieldwork
Capacity
24 per cycle (6 teams of 4)
Language
Darija (primary) · Arabic MSA
Key Learning Outcomes
Set up a functional waste sorting system for a residential building or street block
Build and maintain a basic composting unit using locally available materials
Negotiate a waste collection or recycling agreement with local authorities or service providers

حراس البيئة
Hourras Al Bi’a · Guardians of the Environment
In Development · Launch 2026

A training-of-trainers programme that creates environmental educators for communities across the region. Participants learn how to facilitate environmental awareness sessions for schools, youth centres, and community groups. The training covers facilitation methodology, environmental science basics, activity design, and audience adaptation. Each graduate commits to delivering at least 5 awareness sessions in their community over the following 6 months. This multiplier model means a single cohort of 15 guardians can reach over 500 people within a year.

Target
Youth 20-35 with community engagement experience
Duration
3 weeks intensive training + 6 months community delivery
Capacity
15 guardians per cycle
Language
Arabic (MSA + Darija)
Key Learning Outcomes
Design and deliver a 60-minute environmental awareness session to a group of 20+ participants
Adapt environmental content for different audiences (schools, youth groups, community meetings)
Facilitate a hands-on environmental activity (waste audit, water mapping, biodiversity walk)
Complete at least 5 community sessions and document reach, feedback, and lessons learned

Alumni Pathway

Certificate and Documentation

Every graduate receives a Medforumm Certificate of Completion and photo/video documentation of their community action projects for use in portfolios, applications, or community presentations.

Become an Environmental Guardian

Graduates from any programme who show strong facilitation potential are invited to join the Hourras training and become certified environmental educators for their communities.

Erasmus+ Priority Access

Programme alumni receive priority consideration for Medforumm’s Erasmus+ opportunities, including youth exchanges, environmental training courses, and European Solidarity Corps placements focused on sustainability.

Green Action Network

All graduates join a network of young environmental actors across the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region, sharing resources, organising joint action days, and supporting each other’s community initiatives.

Accountability

Monitoring, Evaluation and Quality

01

Pre and Post Assessment

Every participant completes a self-assessment at the start and end measuring environmental knowledge, confidence in community action, and behavioural change intentions around waste, water, and energy.

02

Action Day Documentation

Every community action day is documented with photos, participant counts, and measurable outputs (trees planted, waste collected, materials distributed). This creates an evidence base for impact reporting.

03

3-Month Follow-Up

Three months after completion, our team contacts every graduate to track sustained environmental actions: continued sorting, community sessions delivered, new initiatives started, or advocacy efforts undertaken.

04

Annual Impact Report

All data is compiled into an annual report with measurable environmental outputs: number of trees, tonnes of waste collected, water campaigns delivered. We report honestly, including what did not work.

For Participants

Your neighbourhood needs you.

No scientific background needed. No fees. All programmes are delivered in Arabic and Darija. If the environment where you live matters to you, that is enough to start.
